Why we think Pete Buttigieg is a Type 3

• Ambition. Buttigieg has shown a relentless drive throughout his life, from attending prestigious schools such as Harvard and Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar to becoming the mayor of South Bend at just 29 years old. He later ran for the Democratic nomination for president in the 2020 election, further demonstrating his drive for success.

• Learning Norwegian to read a book. While studying at Harvard, Buttigieg discovered an author named Erlend Loe, whose work was not yet translated into English. Instead of waiting for the translation, Pete decided to teach himself Norwegian so he could read Loe's work. This anecdote demonstrates his determination and commitment to overcoming obstacles to pursue his interests.

• Demeanor. He carries himself with confidence and a smoothness. During interviews and public appearances, his speech is articulate and his responses are thoughtful. He maintains steady eye contact and employs measured hand gestures to emphasize his points. He has been criticized for coming across as overly rehearsed or scripted.

• Prioritizing work over personal life. In his memoir, Buttigieg acknowledged that his pursuit of success led him to put his personal life on hold, including his relationships and desire to start a family.

• "1000 Homes in 1000 Days" initiative. Although many politicians have initiatives like this, the details highlight Buttigieg’s work ethic, ambition, and executive functioning skills. South Bend was grappling with a high number of abandoned homes, which contributed to crime, lower property values, and undermined neighborhood morale. When Buttigieg became Mayor, he pledged to address this issue head-on by repairing or demolishing 1000 homes within 1000 days. He assembled a team, including Code Enforcement, Building Department, and Community Investment staff. Despite the complexities and controversy of the project, he pushed forward, garnering support by engaging with the community through meetings to address concerns and needs. Under his leadership, he surpassed the original aim with 1023 properties addressed, including rehabilitations and demolitions.

• Image consciousness. In his curated public appearances and speeches, he emphasizes his youth, military service, and policy expertise as a strategic combination to build a specific image of success. He also consistently emphasizes, as he did in his memoir Shortest Way Home,  his impressive background by discussing his education at Harvard, studying as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, and his early career as a consultant at McKinsey.  

• Adaptability. Throughout his career, Buttigieg has demonstrated an ability to adapt to different roles and environments, from his time as a Naval Intelligence officer to his tenure as mayor, and later as a presidential candidate and U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

• Drive for excellence in multiple arenas.  In addition to his political achievements, he is a talented pianist and has showcased his musical abilities in public performances. In terms of languages, he speaks English, Norwegian, Spanish, Italian, Maltese, French, and he studied Arabic and Dari while in Afghanistan. 

• Pragmatism over values. Buttigieg has faced accusations of political opportunism, such as when he shifted from initially supporting Medicare-for-All to advocating for a more moderate healthcare plan during his presidential campaign. This change may have been driven by a desire for broader appeal rather than a genuine reflection of his values.

• Overcoming challenges. Despite facing obstacles in his career, Buttigieg has demonstrated resilience and determination. For instance, during his presidential campaign, he faced criticism for his lack of experience on the national stage and for being relatively unknown compared to other candidates. Nevertheless, he continued to campaign and managed to win the Iowa caucuses, becoming the first openly gay candidate to earn presidential primary delegates from a major party.
