Countries and Cultures That Reflect Enneagram Types

Israel: Enneagram Type 8 Culture

Why we think the Israel is a Type 8 culture

  • Chutzpah. The Yiddish term "chutzpah" (meaning: extreme self-confidence or audacity) is often used in Israeli vernacular and encapsulates the bold, audacious spirit of the people. It is commonly used to describe someone who has overstepped the boundaries of accepted behavior, but it can also be used in a positive way to celebrate challenging the status quo and pushing boundaries.

  • Direct communication. Israelis are known for their straightforward, assertive, and direct communication, often referred to as "dugri." There is a passion and intensity in how they talk about their emotions. Whether it’s in business meetings or on the streets, Israelis tend to speak their minds without sugarcoating, valuing honesty and transparency over politeness. Outsiders often perceive them as rude as a result.

  • Military influence and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The strength and readiness of the IDF, with its mandatory conscription and defense capabilities, exemplifies the values of strength, resilience, and a readiness to use force to defend one's country. This ingrained sense of strength and assertiveness is evident in most aspects of Israeli life.

  • Start-Up Nation." As a nation, Israel is a startup. They had to start with nothing and pull themselves up by their bootstraps. They had to fight for survival and grow to economic viability by brute force against the odds. This has had both positive and negative implications within and outside Israeli society. Israel also has a robust startup culture in part due to the boldness, willingness to take risks, determination, and initiative of the people. It’s also a reflection of the desire to be independent and self-reliant.

  • Toughness. In Israeli society, there is an emphasis on being tough, gritting your teeth, and a feeling that only the strong survive.
