Why we think Prince is a Type 4

  • Emotional sensitivity. Prince's music often delved into themes of love, loss, and longing, reflecting his emotional depth and sensitivity. His songs were personal and intimate, revealing his vulnerability and introspection, including in one of his most famous songs, “Purple Rain.”

  • Aesthetic attunement. Prince's appreciation for beauty and art was evident in his music, fashion, and overall presentation. He was very detail-oriented and took great care in creating a visually and sonically cohesive experience for his audience.

  • Bold expression of individuality. In 1993, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, which was a combination of the male and female symbols. This action was an expression of his individuality and also a protest against his record label, Warner Bros., for control over his music. This symbol later became known as the "Love Symbol."

  • Willingness to explore deep and dark emotions. Prince's songs, such as "The Beautiful Ones" and "When Doves Cry," often showcase themes of emotional turmoil and inner pain. He was not afraid to explore the painful parts of life.

  • Isolation. Throughout his career, Prince was known to be private and somewhat reclusive, often retreating to his Paisley Park compound to work on his music.

  • Unique identity. He often pushed the boundaries of fashion and gender norms, showcasing his individuality and artistic vision.

  • Emphasis on staying true to his vision. Prince was committed to staying authentic to his artistic vision, even when it meant going against the expectations of the music industry. He fought for creative control over his work and was known for his strong sense of independence. He was an early adopter of digital distribution and the internet for marketing his music. He released albums online for his fans, experimented with different strategies to bypass traditional record labels, and built his own website, NPG Music Club, to engage directly with his audience (this also speaks to his 3 Wing).

  • Alter egos. Prince occasionally used alter egos, such as Camille and Jamie Starr, to explore different facets of his personality and further express his creativity. This use of alter egos is indicative of Prince’s desire to explore his personal identity.

Prince quotes that show he is a Type 4

  • "There's a dark side to everything. I like to explore that dark side."

  • "I don't really care so much what people say about me because it usually is a reflection of who they are."

  • “The music, for me, doesn’t come on a schedule. I don’t know when it’s going to come, and when it does, I want it out.”

  •  “When you sit down to write something, there should be no guidelines. The main idea is not supposed to be, ‘How many different ways can we sell it?’ That’s so far away from the true spirit of what music is.”

  • "Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people."

  • "I have a writing addiction. I can't imagine not writing music."

  • “If you lend your consciousness to someone else, you’re a robot.”
