Why we think Osama Bin Laden is a Type 1
Posture and demeanor. Bin Laden had an upright posture. He spoke like a lawyer giving testimony to a jury during his speeches.
Disciplined lifestyle. Bin Laden was a proponent of strict observance of Islamic practices. He believed that following a strict set of rules and principles was necessary for personal growth and social progress.
High standards. Bin Laden held himself and his followers to very high standards and was often critical of those who he believed were not living up to their potential or were not following his vision of a pure Islamic state.
Righteousness and focus on duty. Bin Laden believed that his way of interpreting Islam was the only correct way, and he denounced other interpretations as un-Islamic. He saw himself as a defender of Islam and believed that he had a duty to fight against those who he deemed to be enemies of Islam.
Critical. Bin Laden was critical of the Saudi Arabian government and believed that they had strayed from the “right” path of Islam. He believed that the government had become corrupt and that they had become too close to the United States.
Fault-finding and black and white thinking. Bin Laden strictly adhered to Islamic fundamentalism. He spoke about establishing a pure Islamic state. He saw anyone who opposed his vision as an enemy of Islam and therefore was aggressive about declaring it his duty to fight against American interests.
Osama Bin Laden quotes that show he is a Type 1
"To kill Americans and their allies -- civilians and military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it."
"The sword will continue to be sharp and the arm of the Mujahid will continue to be raised until we demolish this unjust system."
"Every Muslim must rise to defend his religion. The wind of faith is blowing, and the winds of change are blowing to remove evil from the peninsula of Muhammad."
"There are only two parties in the world now, the believers and the infidels."
"Our fight against the Americans is not because we are opposed to freedom and democracy, but because we want to liberate our land from foreign occupation.”
"We do not fear death, for we are already dead. Our reward is with Allah."
"It is the duty of every Muslim to fight against the infidels who have occupied our lands and defiled our holy places."
"Our struggle is not for personal gain, but for the sake of Allah and the defense of Islam."
