When Coaching Feels Flat
Sometimes coaching feels alive, electric, and full of possibility. And sometimes it doesn’t.
Every coach has sessions that feel flat. The client is talking, but not quite connected. You are listening, but not fully lit up. The conversation stays safe, predictable, and surface-level.
Flatness can come from the client not being fully present or not bringing what really matters to them. It can also come from the coach avoiding risk, rushing to help, or staying in performance mode. Often, flatness emerges when both people are unconsciously trying to keep the session comfortable.
A feeling of flatness, like any feeling, is data. There is information. It can be a signal to pause, name the energy, and ask a deeper question.
“Can I check in with you? I’m noticing this conversation feels a little flat. What’s actually most important to you in this moment?
“It feels like we are a bit stuck in this conversation. How can we close the session on a strong note?”
“It seems like you are playing it safe in this conversation. What would move the needle on what you really want?”
Coaching application. In your next session when the energy feels flat, name it gently and ask the client what they are feeling. Trust that bringing awareness to the energy itself can be the doorway to something real.
Life application. How are you playing it safe in your life right now?
